Released on March 31, 2005, the UN Millennium Ecosystem Assessment report is the most comprehensive audit ever conducted of the Earth's natural capital. The report's findings reveal that human actions are putting such strain on the environment that the ability of the planet's ecosystems to sustain future generations is in doubt. Nevertheless, the assessment shows that it is possible to reverse the degradation of many ecosystem services over the next 50 years, if we take the appropriate steps.
The report describes environmental restoration as a key practice that can prevent many of the natural processes upon which humans depend, such as the recycling of air and water, from collapsing. How On Earth highlights real-life stories of people engaged in these types of projects, helping reverse some of the unprecedented environmental decline spotlighted in the Millenium report.
